Earth Month spotlight: thoughtful AI for a sustainable future

How can we use Artificial Intelligence responsibly while still embracing its power to innovate? This Earth Month, STAT, Turnberry Solutions’ employee-run sustainability group, is reflecting on the environmental impact of AI and how thoughtful use can make a difference. AI enables us to solve complex problems faster, generate new ideas, and deliver value for our clients. At the same time, these systems rely on real-world resources such as electricity, water, and physical infrastructure, which grow in demand as AI adoption increases.

The good news is that AI can also be part of the solution. When used thoughtfully, AI can help reduce environmental impact and accelerate sustainability initiatives. Organizations around the world are applying AI to improve renewable energy forecasting, optimize energy grids and transportation, reduce waste in supply chains, and advance climate research. AI can identify patterns and efficiencies that humans alone might miss, helping businesses and communities make smarter, more sustainable decisions without slowing innovation.

The key is using AI intentionally and responsibly, focusing on solutions that create positive impact.

At Turnberry, we encourage deliberate habits when using AI: evaluating whether it is the right tool for the task, crafting precise prompts to generate clear results efficiently, combining related questions into a single request, reusing valuable outputs, and focusing on what is needed to avoid unnecessary computation. Small changes like these help reduce unnecessary processing and resource use without slowing innovation.

Candidly, the technology space is still learning how to balance AI’s immense potential with its environmental footprint. In practice, this means asking tough questions: Are we generating content we truly need? Could multiple teams share a single AI output instead of duplicating efforts? Are we measuring the real-world impact of our AI initiatives? Thoughtful teams will embrace AI’s power while also taking responsibility for the broader consequences of its use.

Through STAT and across our teams, Turnberry is committed to advancing AI adoption in ways that drive innovation, improve outcomes, and uphold environmental responsibility. By balancing technology and stewardship, we can leverage AI’s power while minimizing its footprint.

This Earth Month, we invite everyone at Turnberry and in our broader network to take practical steps to use AI responsibly:

  1. Be intentional: Ask whether AI is the right tool for your task before generating content.
  2. Write clear prompts: Well-defined prompts reduce repeated requests and unnecessary computation.
  3. Combine and reuse outputs: Group related questions and save valuable AI responses for future use.
  4. Focus on what’s needed: Request summaries or targeted outputs rather than large, unfocused results.
  5. Share best practices: Encourage colleagues and teams to adopt responsible AI habits.

Small, thoughtful actions can add up to meaningful environmental impact while still allowing us to innovate and explore AI’s potential. We hope these tips inspire you to consider the role of AI in sustainability and wish everyone a happy, impactful Earth Month.
