Modernizing monolith to serverless SaaS with AWS for Schreiber Foods

Client: Schreiber Foods

Schreiber Foods, a global food and beverage company, embarked on a transformative journey to modernize a decades-old system that had become a barrier to growth. Renowned for world-class operational execution, Schreiber found itself constrained by legacy technology that couldn’t keep pace with evolving business demands.

While Schreiber’s processes were true competitive differentiators, they were constrained by heavily customized, commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) solutions. To compensate for critical functionality gaps, particularly in customer service and operational performance, the company had layered on numerous bolt-ons. This patchwork approach led to complexity, fragile integrations, and costly upgrade cycles. Schreiber faced a tough decision: continue navigating painful upgrades or sacrifice the very capabilities that set them apart. Neither was a viable option.

Recognizing the opportunity for transformational change, Schreiber made a bold move to leap ahead of legacy constraints. Embracing the momentum of digital innovation, the company set out to build a scalable, cloud-native SaaS platform tailored to its evolving business. This vision led to the creation of The Hive, an AI-ready solution powered by AWS that is reshaping how Schreiber manages production, streamlines inventory, and optimizes operations. Beyond internal use, The Hive extends its value by enabling companies across industries to modernize warehouse management, quality assurance, and production execution through a unified, modern platform.

Client challenge

Despite its operational strength, Schreiber’s legacy COTS platform had become a major obstacle. A database-centric monolithic architecture—with deeply embedded business logic—made the legacy system difficult to scale and costly to maintain. Reliance on on-premises infrastructure added further inefficiencies and operational risk. Rising demands for real-time visibility, advanced quality control, and seamless integration with third-party systems across the supply chain magnified these challenges. Off-the-shelf SaaS solutions couldn’t support Schreiber’s unique business processes or preserve its competitive differentiation, prompting the company to pursue a full-scale digital transformation.

Our solution

We partnered with Schreiber to reimagine and rebuild its core platform as a modular, serverless SaaS solution on AWS. Delivery was structured around multiple Agile workstreams that focused on modernizing the user experience, accelerating development with generative AI, and designing for scale from day one. Core elements included:

  • Serverless architecture: AWS Lambda and API Gateway-enabled scalable, event-driven services without the burden of server management.
  • Containerized services: Amazon ECS with Fargate-powered microservices to ensure portability, maintainability, and operational efficiency.
  • AI-supported replatforming: Generative AI tools like Q for Developer and GitHub Copilot accelerated the rewrite of legacy PL/SQL logic into modern Python code.
  • Enterprise-grade cloud architecture: Amazon RDS is being deployed to enable resilient, purpose-driven, and highly efficient databases, with Amazon Aurora identified as the target state following the legacy database-to-Postgres replatforming. Federated and secure authentication is supported through Amazon Cognito and Azure AD.
  • Embedded intelligence: Amazon Bedrock and CloudWatch have been leveraged to support intelligent assistance and real-time observability.
  • Modular SaaS model: The new platform, branded The Hive, is being built to support multi-tenancy, real-time dashboards, ERP integration, and extensibility to emerging tech such as robotics and AGVs.

Sri Kantamneni, executive vice president and chief information and digital officer at Schreiber, said, “The Hive is more than a platform—it’s a strategic enabler. With Rise and Shift, we moved from monolithic complexity to cloud-native agility, unlocking efficiency and innovation across our operations. They understood the stakes and delivered with urgency, precision, and purpose. Our teams are stronger because of this collaboration.”
